Ushadi (Lizardfolk)
Hailing from the steamy rainforests of Yechana, the the majority of the Ushadi people migrated to Aipana years ago in order to escape the enslavement of their civilization by the Aegian Empire. They found solace in the country of Sarmatia, where, despite initial difficulties, they have integrated well into Amazon culture. Now dwelling in the humid northern swamps of Sarmatia, they prefer secluded villages to bustling cities and thatched roof huts to marble palaces.
Though sometimes considered stupid by other races, the Ushadi's tribal politics can be surprisingly complex, and their bestial mannerisms hide a dangerous low cunning and vicious predatory instinct, traits they are more than willing to feign lack of for tactical advantage against their foes. While they are out of place at court, the Ushadi engage in warfare with an utter lack of civility and fair play that gives new meaning to the phrase "in cold blood."
Ushadi tribes are generally led by a group of minor chiefs, each of which govern a different aspect of tribal life, such as hunting, farming, building, mating, and the like. These are presided over by a Tribe Chief. Male Ushadi are smaller than the females, and must fight each other for the right to mate with them. Fights are rarely fatal, as the survival of the tribe trumps personal pride, and the Ushadi prefer not to lose talented hunters or skilled scouts.
Ushadi females lay one to three eggs at the beginning of winter, and keep them in special hatcheries where they are carefuly insulated for over a year, and communally guarded and cared for by the tribe's females. The eggs usually hatch in early spring the following year, yielding hatchlings about 1 foot long from snout to tail tip. Ushadi young can walk a few minutes after birth and hunt a few hours after that. They share basic genetic memories with their bloodline, making most Ushadi young literate and aware of their environment and the general nature of the world at birth. They speak in tiny, squeaky, voices which deepens to a raspy, guttural growl with age.
Young Ushadi hate being called babies, and prefer the term "hatchling". Being called cute absolutely infuriates them.
Most Ushadi tends towards neutrality, and worship Kuari, the Tempest. They prefer to refer to her by their own names: The Scaled Mother, the Queen of Dark and Still Places, or the Dragon of the Deep. Their beliefs and practices in faith differ from mainstream Sarmatia, but their reverence is no less than that of the Amazons.
