Ara, the Champion
Alignment: Lawful Good
Portfolio: Justice, Honor, Duty, Mercy, Courage, Bravery, Strategy, Chivalry
Domains: Law, Good, Protection, War
Worshipers: Knights, Paladins, Fighters, Monks, Some Nobles
Favored Weapon: Long Sword
Holy Symbol: Long Swords Crossed Behind a Shield
Sacred Animal: Lion
Holy Month: March
Monastic Order: The Guardianship
Headquarters: Andwil, Bergen
Colors: Blue and White
Sometimes called the “Knight Paragon”, and the “First Paladin”, Ara enjoys wide worship by highborn and commoner alike as the embodiment of high ideals in warfare as well as rulership. He is the second son of Athair, and depicted as a tall, stately man wearing once shining yet badly damaged armor. He suffers from grievous wounds, yet stands resolutely with shield on one arm, and sword in his hand, between innocents and those who would harm them. Unlike Solon, who while heroic, is often frightening in his dispostion towards anything deemed impure, Ara advocates the prudent dispensation of mercy.
The church of Ara typically abstains from the construction of especially luxurious temples, believing in substance rather than appearance. Their places of worship are usually a combination of sturdy fortress and cozy home, with every member of the staff doing their part to keep the grounds clean and neat, and the resident members of the faith cared for. Clergy, Paladins, and Monks of Ara's faith can always find a bed, a hot meal, and healing in one of his temples, and even complete strangers can expect help in emergencies.
His faithful often organize local militias, training ordinary people in self defense and basic military skills, so they can better defend their communities. Many of the Church's folk also enlist in the local watch, and earn their living protecting fellow citizens. Ara's Monks and Clerics are known as The Guardianship, and most of them take care of his temples. Others are assigned as guardians to various important people and places the Church deems in need of protection. Ara's paladins are divided into two orders, the Order of the Sword, and the Order of the Shield. The Swords often so-operated with the church of Solon in hunting down creatures of evil, while the Shields devote themselves to preserving peace and good order in the more civilized areas, frequently serving as constables and judges.
